The Best Poutine in Maine
Respect the Curds: The Poutine Expert Knows Maine's Best
If there is one food I know better than almost anyone else in Maine, I’m certain it is poutine. In fact, I’m “The Poutine Expert” on X. This is thanks to the fact that my mother is from Quebec City, and I’ve spent a great many months of my life up there and I’ve eaten an ungodly amount over my life. I know what makes good poutine and what imposter poutine is.
Maine's poutine scene is starting to heat up, but the majority of poutine served here is junk. But there are a handful of winners who respect the dish and serve it as the Quebecers intended.
Top Pick: Blazes Burgers
Location: 861 Main St, Westbrook, ME 04092
Blazes Burgers offers a poutine that pays homage to traditional preparations. Their dedication to authenticity is evident in the harmonious blend of crispy fries, fresh squeaky cheese curds, and flavorful chicken gravy. The casual and friendly atmosphere adds to the overall experience that feels like it could be right out of a lower Quebec City neighborhood. If you want real poutine, go to Blazes.
Honorable Mention: Pinky D's Poutine Factory
Location: 1110 Minot Ave, Auburn, ME 04210
Pinky D's Poutine Factory, operated by the skilled duo Deborah and Randy Smith, brings a unique twist to traditional poutine. Their offerings include a variety of toppings that add a creative flair without compromising the dish's foundational elements. This is NOT an easy thing to do! Their dedication to quality ingredients and innovation has earned them recognition, including being crowned the Maine Champion at the inaugural Maine PoutineFest.
Maine's poutine landscape is evolving quickly, with more establishments across the state offering their takes on this beloved dish. As the scene grows, events like the Maine PoutineFest provide a platform for chefs and enthusiasts to come together and celebrate poutine's rich heritage and its promising future in Maine. See you there in 2025!
