Maine’s Best Fried Clams
Experiencing fried clams is essential to any visit to the Maine coast. There are many very fine establishments serving this delicacy, but these two stand out to me.
Top Pick: Bob’s Clam Hut
Address: 315 US Route 1, Kittery, ME 03904
Bob’s Clam Hut has long been my favorite destination for fried clams. Each clam is lightly coated and fried to achieve a delicate, crispy exterior while maintaining a tender, juicy interior. The subtle brininess of the clams shines through, complemented by a perfectly seasoned batter that doesn’t overpower the natural flavor. I understand why Martha Stewart has named Bob’s her favorite fried clam; it is consistently better than the others.
Runner-Up: Ken’s Place
Address: 207 Pine Point Rd, Scarborough, ME 04074
Ken’s Place offers fried clams that are both flavorful and expertly prepared. I always order mine fried in crumbs, not batter. The balance between the crispy coating and the tender clams creates a harmonious texture, while the seasoning enhances the clams’ natural sweetness without overwhelming it. This attention to detail makes Ken’s fried clams a standout choice for seafood enthusiasts. I love their crinkle cut fries (with distilled vinegar), too!
Both establishments are a showcase for the art of frying clams, a true Maine delicacy.
